Wins NICE3 Award
Dynamet
Technology Inc, of Burlington, MA recieved an award of $500,000
from OIT to support the development of a die casting shot sleeve
for "Increased Productivity and Reduced Energy Consumption
in Metal-casting Using Titanium Matrix Composite Tooling".
The grant announced in December has a costy share of $900,00.

Lands New DOE OIT
Agriculture IOF Research Award
Metabolix
of Cambridge Massachusetts was awarded, in a competitive solicitation,
$7.4 million to study "Biomass Biorefinery for Production
of Polymers and Fuel." The research will be carried out in
partnership with 9 other University and Federal Laboratory partners,
including: UMass Amherst, UMass Lowell, the National Renewable
Energy Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Lab. For more details

Site Winners Awarded at the 4th Biennial OIT Industrial Energy
Efficiency Symposium and Expo February 19-22, Washington, DC.
MAIOF
was awarded second place in the national State's IOF Web site
contest. MAIOF placed with Utah and Iowa in the top three spots.
OIT hosted its 4th Expo targeting the nine largest energy-using
"Industries of the Future"-including chemicals, petroleum, paper
and forest products, agriculture, steel, aluminum, metalcasting,
glass and mining. Nine states were awardees and links to their
sites can be found on our Partners page.
Industrial
Assessment Center Soliciting Requests for Audits
The
Industrial Assessment Center at the University of Massachusetts
provides energy, waste, and productivity assessments to small
and mid-sized manufacturers. Assessments are provided at no cost
by experienced engineering faculty and students. Opportunities
for plant audits are still available this year.

Printing and Dyeing Corporation of New Bedford recieved a
NICE3 award of $525,000 over three years sponsoring the Commercialization
of Cleaner Technologies for the Continuous Dyeing of Textiles.
With support from the Massachusetts Office of Technical Assistance
and the Division of Energy Resources.Charles
River Association of Boston was the
co-recipient of $1,260,000 over two years, for the Evaluation
& Characterization of In-Line Annealed Continuous Cast Aluminum
Sheet under the DOE OIT Aluminum Industries of the Future program.Under
the Inventions and Innovations program at OIT, Bost Nitride
Technologies of Canton, Mass recieved $200,000 over three
years for the development of Novel LED for Illumination Applications.

Paper NICE3 Success
Story
Erving
Paper Mills Inc., of Erving MA was the recipient of a $500,000
NICE3 grant from DOE Office of Industrial Technologies. Funds
were succesfully used to demonstrate a new process for tissue
paper manufacturing. Higher rates of recycling and lower energy
use were realized through the adoption of this new technology.

Kickoff Event
Dinner
and Speakers from industry, government, and academia gathered
together to inaugurate the MA IOF program. Held on September 15th
at the Worcester Centrum, nearly 100 people witnessed the plenary
address by Senator Edward M. Kennedy.

IOF holds Metal Processing Road Mapping session
on March 1st at Worcester Polytechnic Institute
The first workshop was held
March 1st, 2002 to begin the process to improve
industry participation in US DOE and state
sponsored energy efficiency and productivity
improvement programs. The Road Mapping Session
was attended by more than 70 representatives
from state, federal, and private service organizations.
Numerous exhibits of public/private industry
collaboration, and energy efficiency projects
specific to the Metal procession industry were
illustrated. Vision and roadmapping sessions
were conducted to elicit exchange of ideas
and identification of critical needs areas,
including: materials technology, manufacturing
tachnology
and
environmental technology.

IOF Hosts Northeast E2 Exchange Industrial Energy Efficiency
Peer Forum November 27, 2001
This
first meeting of its kind was held in Westborough Mass. Thanks goes
out to Tim Stout and National
Grid for the generous corporate support
of this event. More than 45 participants attended, including Industry
leaders, Federal and State Energy Offices, environmental agencies,
gas and electric utilities, UMass and UNH, industry service providers
and State IOF Steering Committee members. Representation from every
New England State and New York were present to learn about resources
available from private and public sector service providers.The
first half of the day provided an overview of all of the resources
that the DOE Office of Industrial Technology brings to the table
and end users can gain access to those resources. Moreover, how
they can help industry and customers of energy service providers.
The second half of the day provided a forum for numerous other state
and private sector programs to communicate about their programs
and discuss ways to leverage services. You can read the Agenda

IOF Chemicals Workshop
Held June 20th 2001
NETI
held its stakeholder meeting and first MA
IOF Chemicals Workshop on June 20th
at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. In the morning session,
industry, government and university stakeholders were briefed on
NETI pollution prevention partnerships, progress to date and future
initiatives. The afternoon workshop brought together chemical industry
representatives to develop visions and roadmaps for technologies
needed to sustain economic growth in Massachusetts. For more information

Road Mapping Session
The
MA IOF program conducted its first Roadmapping session with the
Forest Products Industry following a meeting of the New England
Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI)/Paper
Industry Manufacturers Association (PIMA) March, 2 in Springfield,
MA. More than 35 attendess, representing paper manufacturers, suppliers
to the paper industry, government and university, were introduced
to resources available to them through DOE's Office of Industrial
Technology. Manufacturers discussed strengths of the Massachusetts
and New England paper industry as well as its challenges for the
